Defined as a neurological condition that causes involuntary sounds and movements. Signs and symptoms of Tourette syndrome typically show up between ages 2 and 12, with the average being around 7 years of age. Males are about three to four times more likely than females to develop Tourette syndrome. Two types of tics; vocal tics are rare but can occur (sniffing, throat clearing, grunting, hooting and shouts) and motor (eye blinking, jaw movements, head bobbing/jerking) tics.
3 of every 1,000 children, 6 through 17 years of age and living in the United States have been diagnosed with TS. TS is often accompanied by another co-existing disorder. According to the CDC 79% of children with TS were also diagnosed for another mental health, behavioral, or developmental condition.
